Welkom in Nederland

The pilot makes the final call. We are making our approach and in a few moments, we will land! Well, if we don’t crash land. I look down my window in hopes that even if I am 10 thousand feet above the ground, my eye will be able to catch some people ‘fietsen’ (Dutch word for biking), even one. Sadly, I couldn’t spot any. Before my journey, I had done a quick research and was constantly told Dutch people bike a lot. I knew this for a fact! YouTube wouldn’t lie, would it? As a results I was so anxious to see everyone biking.  As Sara Sheridan once said, “There is something particularly fascinating about seeing places you know in a piece of art – be that in a film, or a photograph, or a painting.” In my mind I was asking myself, ‘… so, where are the bikes??’  I do not remember if I was unconscious for a while or I was just caught up with process getting out of the airport as quickly as possible that I did not notice what I refer to as ‘a multitude of bikers biking.’ It is as though someone poured freezing water on me and I gained my conscious immediately then saw what was happening. It was bikes everywhere. I mean, bikes everywhere! Wherever I lay my eyes on the streets, there was either someone biking or at least just parked bicycles.  Definitely I was expecting to find a profusion of cyclist, but this was just way beyond what I expected.  As the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. So as a way of getting out of this cultural shock, the best thing I could think of was getting a bike hitting the road! Although I cannot confidently say am now ok seeing so many bikes, I can safely say am okay with biking like everyone else now. Anywhere and everywhere. After all, its healthier and more environmental friendly.  So here is to the three years (probably more) of ‘fietsen.’ Welcome to the land of biking Geofrey, welcome!
